Lexington in the Rain

Downtown when it’s raining
So hard that drops are bouncing off concrete
Like pennies thrown in fountains,
A girl sits beneath a green stoop. Knees to her
Chest, worn jeans are wet on the bottom
And fraying. Lighting is striking the grayness
Behind business buildings made of brick and steel.
A camera is propped on the girls’ knees
And I wonder if my car is in her shot while
I sit rumbling at a red light. Or are
Those black men walking, shaved heads glistening
No umbrellas. Three Hispanic men are working
Construction ahead. Their truck tires are dried
With mud the color of their leather skin. A
Homeless man staggers near my bumper,
His eyes red like my car, teeth yellow
Like lighting. Hair sprawled like briars,
And no socks. He is smiling. The girl is adjusting her camera.
The light is green. Pressing the gas my wheels
Spin and the homeless man looks up from
A trash can, holding a half filled
Mountain Dew. The rain beats harder and
He unscrews the blue cap.
